When people think of wool, they usually imagine thick jumpers and winter layers. But Merino is different. It's naturally breathable, lightweight, and works just as well in spring and summer as it does in colder weather.
At Smalls, we love Merino because it helps us (and our Small people) live a little more simply — wear more, wash less, and feel comfortable, whatever the season.
Merino Wool in Warm Weather? Absolutely.
Merino wool is temperature-regulating, which means it keeps you warm when it’s cool and cool when it’s warm. That’s not magic — it’s just nature doing its thing.
It also doesn’t hold on to smells like synthetic fabrics do, so you can go longer between washes. Which, if you’re anything like us, is a small parenting win worth celebrating.
Less washing means less water, less energy, and clothes that last longer. Plus, fewer laundry piles. Everyone’s happy.
Simple Ways to Style Smalls Merino Wool in Spring & Summer
Here are a few easy ways to keep wearing your Smalls through the warmer months:
-
T-shirts and vests make great lightweight layers on warmer days — soft against skin and breathable enough for running around outside.
-
Long-sleeves can be worn over a vest in the morning and tied around the waist later when the sun’s out.
-
Merino base layers are great under school uniforms or sports kits — especially when the weather’s changeable.
-
Pyjamas in Merino help regulate body temperature overnight, making them ideal for spring nights when it’s too cold for just a t-shirt, but too warm for fleece.
One of our favourites? EJ wears her Smalls cami to bed, then keeps it on the next day layered under her favourite Planet Jaimie shirt. Comfy for sleep, breathable for the day — and zero fuss in the morning.
Wear Longer, Waste Less
This April, as part of Earth Month, we’re thinking about the small things we can do to tread more lightly — like wearing our clothes a few more times before washing, and choosing natural fibres that are kinder to the planet.
We’re inviting you (and your Small people) to style your Merino in three different ways this month and share it with us. No pressure, just a bit of fun — and a chance to celebrate clothes that work a little harder.
